Talented drivers set for second half of season

July 23, 2019 - As one of the largest and most premier teams to compete in the Battery Tender Global MX-5 Cup Presented by BF Goodrich Tires, Copeland Motorsports will take on a new look this coming weekend. A change in the overall driver lineup will see the Stevensville, Maryland based squad enter only two drivers at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course with Bryan Ortiz and Michael Carter attempting to make their run at the championship as the series makes the turn for the second half of the season.

"We have three less drivers than we did at Road America but our focus is still the same, win!" explained Copeland Motorsports' Dean Copeland. "In most race series below the professional ranks, there is always some driver drop off in the second half of the season, so I am not to stressed. Our results across two different series makes us one of the best teams in the paddock, and we will be able to focus and provide more attention to Bryan and Michael's championship chase."

With multiple wins to his credit over his Global MX-5 Cup career, Ortiz currently sits third in the points battle, a scant eight points away from the current leader. Mazda Motorsports driver and series rookie Michael Carter is only 29 points in arrears of Ortiz, but leads the Rookie of the Year honors by a healthy margin.

Copeland continued, "Tyler Maxson and Tyler Gonzalez have decided to shift their focus to other events in 2019 but are still much a part of the Copeland Motorsports program. These two young drivers are part of the future of motorsports, and we look forward to continuing additional race programs with them."

With cars now available, Copeland Motorsports has opportunities for one off events in the Battery Tender Global MX-5 Cup Presented by BF Goodrich Tires at both Portland International Raceway and WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in September.

"Whether drivers are interested in a one off event or looking to prepare for 2020, we can provide them with what they need," added Copeland.

The Battery Tender Global MX-5 Cup Presented by BF Goodrich Tires drivers will hit the track Friday for two official practice sessions with qualifying and race one taking place on Saturday. Race two will go green Sunday morning, prior to Road To Indy events and the NTT IndyCar Series race that afternoon.
