FORT MYERS, Fla. (Aug. 14, 2025) — AAG Racing announced today that Skyler Cottrell will reunite with the organization for the final two events of the Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup regular season. Cottrell will pilot the No. 76 AAG Racing entry at Virginia International Raceway (VIR), Aug. 22-24, and at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta for the regular season finale at his home track Oct. 8-11.
Last time out, Cottrell earned top 10s in both races during his Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup debut with AAG Racing back in May at Barber Motorsports Park. The Georgia driver has had a strong season in Spec MX-5, where he has amassed one win, a podium, two poles, and five fastest laps. His win in the series came at VIR during the Hoosier Super Tour in April. He returns to VIR hoping to do much of the same — go flag to flag for the victory. This time, he’ll be behind the wheel of the MX-5 Cup car, bringing added confidence from his recent seat time.
The 21-year-old driver began his senior year this week at Georgia Southern University, where he studies economics. While school is a priority, racing is in his blood. Cottrell comes from a family of racers, including his father and grandfather. He now sets his sight on continuing to make the family proud in his MX-5 Cup opportunities.
Cottrell continues to work hard, on and off the track, to build his brand and master his craft, with hopes of an invitation to the Scholarship Shootout. His goal remains to be competitive wherever he is racing, with hopes of a full-time campaign in the Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup.
See Cottrell and the No. 76 AAG Racing Mazda MX-5 on track at VIR Aug. 22-24. As part of the IMSA ladder, the Mazda MX-5 Cup delivers some of the closest and most exciting racing in North America. Events are broadcast live on IMSA.tv and YouTube, with tens of thousands of fans attending in person — offering strong exposure for teams, sponsors, and drivers alike.
“It was never in the plans to run VIR or Road Atlanta, and after Barber we felt pretty quick. We feel like we are where we’re supposed to be, and we’re competitive. We were at VIR back in April, and I was able to put the SMX car on pole and win that race. Spec MX-5 is what builds into global,” said Cottrell.
“I’ve raced against Rocco at VIR back in April in SMX. It’s a lot about learning about each other and how we each drive and what we can take away and learn from each other. I think that will be really beneficial heading into the last four rounds of the season.”
“It will really be about proving myself not only to the team and the fans but also the Mazda guys that decide about the shootout. My goal is to be as precise as possible to finish as high in the order as we can. We have family and friends coming up for the last four rounds of the season — it’s heart-touching that they will be there. It puts pressure on me, but it’ll be good to have them there supporting me.”
“We are looking forward to having Skyler back in an AAG MX-5 Cup car. He did a great job back at Barber and was fast. He’s a great young man, and an excellent teammate,” said Chris Clarke, owner of AAG Racing.
