Portland, Ore, (3 September 2019)- Sick Sideways Racing clinches the ND1 championship and Sarah Montgomery becomes the first female in history to take a step on the podium this weekend at Portland International Raceway during rounds 9 and 10 of the Battery Tender® Global Mazda MX-5 Cup Series Presented by BFGoodrich Tires®.
Sick Sideways and Sarah Montgomery make history this weekend as Sarah became the first female to ever podium in a Battery Tender® Global Mazda MX-5 Cup Series Presented by BFGoodrich Tires® race. She took third position during Saturday’s race after a long battle with teammate, Nathanial Sparks, but backed up her podium position again during Sunday’s race.
“I am absolutely blown away by the amount of reach these podiums have had so far through social media, fans at the track, including Sarah Fisher and Max Papis and phone calls/texts. It truly means the world to me to have people supporting my dreams and following me through my journey,” said Montgomery.
Making more history, John Dean, the 2015 Battery Tender® Global Mazda MX-5 Cup Series Presented by BFGoodrich Tires® Champion, walked away from Portland crowned as the ND1 champion for the 2019 season. Winning 9 of 10 races so far this year, perseverance and speed allowed Dean to claim the championship before the race season completed.
“The most important thing that allowed me to win the championship was consistency and speed,” says Dean. “Having the draft of the faster, ND2 cars, really helped me stay in front of my competition and not allow them to pass me very easily. Competing against some of the best in the industry including Hernan (Palermo) and Sparky (Nathanial Sparks), who I knew would both be extremely fast this year, made me very strict with myself and very focused to be as fast as possible to win it.”
Sick Sideways was able to take both wins during race 10 as John Dean won the ND1 class and Selin Rollan, the ND2 class. Rollan is currently in a battle for the championship lead against Brayn Ortiz of Copeland Motorsports and Robert Stout of MMR Racing. “I think we should be close in points going into the last race weekend,” Rollan said. “Obviously it is going to be a big fight between Bryan (Ortiz) and I and I am sure (Robert) Stout is still in it, so it's going to be an intense one for sure.”
