April 7, 2021 – Following IMSA’s announcement of the cancellation of its event at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, the Idemitsu Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by BFGoodrich Tires can confirm it will remove the event from its 2021 schedule as well. The 2021 Mazda MX-5 Cup season remains a 14-round championship.

Travel and event restrictions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic continue to alter international motorsports schedules. IMSA announced that its event at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, scheduled for July 2 – 5, has been cancelled due to quarantine requirements.

“We are disappointed to not be making a trip to Canada this year, but we understand the circumstances of the cancellation,” said Mazda North American Operations Motorsports Program Manager Jonathan Applegate. “We were fortunate enough to add Sebring last month and keep our 14-race season intact. Everyone in the MX-5 Cup paddock hopes we’ll have the chance to visit the incredible Canadian race fans next year.”

It was similar circumstances that prevented the FIA World Endurance Championship from competing at Sebring International Raceway in March, which opened up room on the schedule for MX-5 Cup. Those two rounds now act as the replacement for Canadian Tire Motorsport Park and keeps the 2021 MX-5 Cup schedule with its planned 14-round calendar.

The Idemitsu Mazda MX-5 Cup is four rounds into its 14-round season. Rounds Five and Six take place in two weeks’ time at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, April 23 – 24.
