The combined practice charts were topped by the No. 17 MAZDASPEED/Sparco/Milgard Windows & Doors MX-5 of Elliott Skeer, from Vista, Calif. The 17-year-old was third in the morning session before he hit the tires in Turn One and topped the afternoon with a fast lap of 2:31.734 (88.734 mph).
“First off, I’ve got to thank everybody at CJ Wilson Racing,” Skeer said. “It was a pretty big hit coming out of turn one – it was a 70 mile per hour hit. To be able to go back out in the second session and the car be better than it was the first session, they did a great job with it. I feel like it was just a mistake I’ll learn from and just keep going with it.”
Skeer, the MAZDASPEED Ladder Shootout winner for 2012, led teammate Stevan McAleer by just 0.039-second.
McAleer’s No. 28 CJ Wilson Children’s Charities/Blue Mercury Capital/RUfocused.com/Sambo Website Design MX-5 followed Skeer on the time charts in both 30-minute practices, improving to 2:31.773 (88.711 mph) in the afternoon.
ProMoMo Speed teammates Christian Szymczak and John Dean took the top two spots in the morning session and didn’t improve their times in the afternoon. Szymczak’s 2:32.301 (87.458 mph) behind the wheel of the No. 34 Projections Research/Sick Sideways Mazda MX-5 held third on the combined charts, with Dean’s 2:32.494 (87.347 mph) from the morning session holding fourth.
Dean’s No. 16 Projections Research/Sick Sideways machine was slightly ahead of Szymczak in the afternoon, with the pair third and fourth in the session.
Chad McCumbee improved by 0.002-second in the afternoon session and was fifth-quickest during each session in the No. 29 ModSpace MX-5, the third CJ Wilson Racing car in the top five.
In the Skip Barber MAZDASPEED Pro Series class, Zachry Lee, of San Antonio, Texas, Daniel Moen, of Wilbraham, Mass., and Bryan Hixson, of San Antonio, Texas, led the afternoon session.
The Playboy Mazda MX-5 Cup qualifies on Thursday morning 11:10 a.m. EDT for Thursday afternoon’s season opening race. The series also qualifies and races on Friday.
